Overnight train to Dong Hoi, then to Phong Nho
The train was about half an hour late, arriving at Dong Hoi at 8 inn the morning. One of out compartment companions was also getting off here, and whike waiting, using the translator on Roy's phone we chatted. He gave us s ome naartjies and a local speciality cake/sweet from Hanoi. We were embarrassed we didn't have anything to give him.
We walked to the bus station where we were told to wait on the street outside where we should take the blue bus. We got on about 15 minutes later and slowly it filled up until we were crushed under it bags. The man sitting next to me was nursing an antique wooden birds cage which was amusing the bus. There wad a nice camaraderie. The trip was about a hour.
We got off in the small village of Phong Nho and walked to a coffee shop on the river. I got to play with the puppies and they phoned our lodge to say where we were. Our host arrived on a scooter and ordered a taxi for us.
There was a very loud wedding going on next door and Roy asked if he could take some pictures. Next thing we were invited to join. I showered and put on my party dress while Roy was being drowned with beer :)
We didn't stay too long at the wedding bit rather cycled around a bit. There was drumming coming from the distance and we saw a funeral procession with fancy umbrella type displays being carried with bright colors.
We cycled towards town and saw where Oxylis, the trekking company was. Their restaurant looked nice, so we ordered a bottle of red wine from Chili and I had an alfredo pasta which was great. The pudding menu seemed a bit rude..
