12th Jan. Cambodia

Cambodia via Ho Chi Minh (Saigon)

Early start...collected by our taxi just after 5.30 stopped at Da Nang airport. I slept all the way to Ho Chi Minh City where we transferred to intentional departures and the flight to Siem Reap in Cambodia. Got our visa on arrival without problem, 30 dollars each and once over the embarrassment, quite enjoyed the ride to our hotel "Chez Moi".

Hotel transfer

View from our room

Enormous bath in huge bathroom!

We had a swim and freshened up, then 3 steps from our hotel we were offered a ride. Negotiated him down a bit and hopped on the back. I like theses three wheelers, they make sense here.

You can buy your 3 day pass to Angkor Wat from 5 o clock the day before and still be allowed in on the day of purchase. We were a little before 5 so bought a mielie off the street, next to the stalls selling roasted insects.

Grass hoppers

Just before 5 we bought our tickets, all very efficiently.

Off we headed with our driver to Angkor Wat, the main temple. Siem Reap, the city, is bit very pretty, but as we got closer to the temple you felt like you were leaving the city. More trees and a beautiful lake with cauasual outside restaurants. And then our first sight of one of the beautiful buildings. It really is something to see.
Our driver showed us where to meet him and we walked to the temple.

Since my orange dress looked good in pictures we did a bit of a photo shoot :)

The temple was closing for the day so we weren't allowed further, an made our way back to our driver.

The drive top old town was lovely, through a foresty area with shops selling paintings for the first part. Reminded me a little of Knysna.

We asked to be dropped at the night market where we are sharing a bottle of wine at a Mexican restaurant. We really should give up on wine here as it's expensive and awful.

We moved inside where it's less "on the street" and had some tasty nachos.
